Mediation is facilitated negotiation. The Mediator is a neutral who helps disputants settle their dispute.
Mediators assist disputants to find their own result – one that’s acceptable to the parties. If asked, the mediators will also give an opinion about the likely outcome of a dispute in court. Most disputes that are mediated by Canadian Mediation Association mediators result in settlement.
Many Canadian Mediation Association mediators are trained by the Stitt Feld Handy Group and employ the latest mediator techniques.
If you are looking for an expert opinion about the likely outcome in court, you may wish to hire a retired judge for a Neutral Evaluation.
Who Should Attend the Mediation?
People with authority to settle and people with knowledge about the issues in dispute should, ideally, attend the mediation (with lawyers, if appropriate). Where others would assist in bringing the issue to resolution, they should also be encouraged to attend. Where those with authority to settle cannot attend, they should be available by phone.
Fees
Hourly fees for mediators range from $150 per hour to $700 per hour, depending on the mediator. Many mediators have set half and full-day rates. Please contact us to obtain rates for a specific mediator.
Starting Times
A full day mediation will start at 10:00 a.m. unless otherwise agreed.
A half day mediation will start at 10:00 a.m. or 2:00 p.m. unless otherwise agreed.
Facilities at Canadian Mediation Association’s Toronto Office
Canadian Mediation Association is pleased to offer neutral, convenient and equipped mediation space at its downtown Toronto office. Computers, copying and faxing services are all available.
The fee for rooms is $200 per room per day. The same fee applies whether the room is booked for a half day or a full day. Since each party usually requires a breakout room for mediation, the fee for facilities will be $200 per party. Coffee, tea, cold drinks and snacks are provided at no additional charge. Lunch, if desired, is billed at cost.
